Savor the experience |
Join the festival of Agia Matrona on October 20th in Finikia, one of the most important events in Santorini! Starting from the day before, the church is adorned with decorations, and on the day of the festival, the icon is carried through the streets covered in rosemary and arbaroriza. Don’t miss the chance to experience the colorful festive flags waving in the narrow alleys and the squares around the church transformed into a space of celebration. Taste traditional dishes prepared by local groups such as “xelouristo” cod, wedding pilaf, and meat cooked in cauldrons or baked in wood-fired ovens. This festival offers the perfect opportunity for authentic, traditional entertainment for both locals and visitors who wish to participate.
The Holy Temple of Agia Matrona was built in 1859 by the shipowner Frangiskos Platis in an amphitheatrical location in the settlement of Finikia. The characteristic palm tree in the courtyard dominates and serves as a reference point for the village.
Finikia was once the agricultural settlement of Oia, where farmers lived close to their fields and crops. It was in the large underground cellars there that the famous wines were produced from the nearby vineyards.
